Review of Dumplin' (2018) by Oriondc — 13 Dec 2018
This movie was okay. It seemed to suffer from being too short. I don't know if they edited a bunch of stuff out or what, but there were places that didn't make a lot of sense. Relationships go unexplained, which makes the character's behaviors confusing at times.
I would guarantee there is another 20-30 minutes of this movie sitting on Netflix's cutting room floor somewhere. It's a shame because it would've been so much more fulfilling otherwise. It also looked a little cheaply done - just 3 real sets, some (free) outdoor scenes, etc.
That's fine but it did seem to detract somewhat from the movie. Finally, the main character Dumplin' isn't really that likeable if you step back and think about her. She's kind of awful to her mother, her friends, her love interest, etc.
She has a big chip on her shoulder and wants to play the victim. How am I supposed to empathize with that? It could've been better if the acting of her character was more "fun" but she came off as being mean.
It was overall a cute movie, but could've been so much better with more scenes/explanation and a less mean-spirited protagonist.
