Yes, melodramatic acting but it's the 1940's so it's expected. It is great seeing Peck play a bad guy. I'm not quite sure why Lillian Gish got an Oscar nod for it; she was good but not anything special.
Oscars tend to be more about the politics of Hollywood than the actors' ability to act though; something we just have to accept, I guess. It was probably quite an epic for its time, although now it just kind of drags on.
Pearl was really quite a whiny brat, and that was fairly annoying. The ending was absolutely great though.
