Review of Duel in the Sun (1946) by Skip U — 08 Jan 2010
David Selznick's attempt to re-create his Gone with the Wind tour de force with a Western theme. A morality play about the ill fated life of beautiful Jennifer Jones as a half-breed caught between the lusts of two brothers, one bad, one good (Joseph Cotton, Gregory Peck).
It's unusual to see Gregory Peck play such a despicable character and Cotton turns in a first rate performance. Jone's acting is over the top but who cares - this movie is all about her and her stunning sex appeal.
I couldn't take my eyes off of her during the movie and the ending, while somewhat predictable, is sufficiently dramatic and tragic to keep viewers glued. No wonder Selznick became obssessed with Jones and later married her.
Worth watching for Selznick, Gregory Peck and Jennifer Jones fans.
