Review of DuckTales: The Movie - Treasure of the Lost Lamp (1990) by Sam Wise — 24 Jul 2008
DUCKTALES was a Saturday morning afternoon cartoon series from Disney involving the around the world exploits of Donald's miserly but jovial Uncle Scrooge. This feature film is more like an extended episode of the show, with only marginally beefed up production values, but it's quite a lot of fun.
The first 20 minutes are especially entertaining, as is the climactic finale. The plot, which is something of a mixture of INDIANA JONES and Disney's own ALADDIN, moves along at a breezy pace, and is livened up by the presence of new characters, notably the evil sorcerer Merlock with the voice of Christopher Lloyd, who is arguably one of Disney's underrated villains.
Not a Disney "classic", but solid, breezy fun for a TV-series based movie. (Too bad many of Disney's other DTV sequels couldn't match the energy or liveliness of this one.).
