The first time I saw this, I didn't think it was funny. In frustration I returned to it days later and found I was laughing sometimes. My theory is that Groucho's style seems so obvious to us now after generations of imitation that the ingredient of surprise is lost.

He's sometimes like a comedian with a funny act but off timing. When you get used to his delivery, it starts to seem less hokey and you're more conscious of what's funny about the jokes, rather than how obvious it is that they're supposed to be funny.

Something similar goes for the other Brothers. These movies really improve with a bit of familiarity, yet they can also appeal to children.
