Review of Drunken Angel (1948) by Michael R — 06 Feb 2011
Great movie that attacks cynicism. The drunk alcoholic poison-addicted doctor wallows in defeat because he thinks he is owed something for his lost idealism. Many ppl you know are like this. Hiding behind alcohol and pretending to be a badass is a cover for self-loathing.
The young yakuza with TB is upset his honor and nobility are used and thrown away by cynical higher up gangsters and chooses to counter them. The drunk dr is drawn into treating him and regains his skill level.
So at opposite ends of the spectrum the two revive each other's striving for integrity. Kurosawa shows even "losing" is a gain when real things are lived for even momentarily.
