Story arc reminds me of "A Clockwork Orange" -- the international (i.e. complete) version of the book, anyway. Matt Dillon's performance is middle of the road, as always, but it doesn't really hurt the story; and Kelly Lynch is able to inject believability into their interactions through sheer force of will.
I'll give it points for being a drug movie that covers abuse of legit pharmaceuticals, rather than leaping on the trite and easy romance of street smack; especially only a few years before the heroin chic would boom. Major bonus points for including William S. fucking Burroughs as Father Murphy.
