Review of Driving Miss Daisy (2015) by Jason R — 01 May 2008
There was a time when a film could be moving, could be significant, could be a work of art without being grand stand y and all fireworks. That's when they made Driving Miss Daisy and gave it the best picture Oscar, along with the leading lady, Jessica Tandy.
The beauty about the stage play of Driving Miss Daisy was its' simplicity. Three actors and a small set taking the audience on a journey that required no more of them but that they sit back and listen to the dialogue, all of which was told simply in accesible terms. When they decided to make it into a film, they had to add scenery and other characters and a brilliant score (by Hans Zimmer) to round it out.
That's what they did.
I don't think it is possible for them to have made a better film of this quaint little play; and, as with the play, all the audience need do is sit back, relax and listen to the dialogue and go for the ride.
It isn't earth shattering. But not everything is. Not everything needs to be Angels in America or Schindler's List or Titanic.. There is a place for quiet, quaint little stories that show 20 years in the lives of two (well, three) people, 20 years in the life of a friendship.
This is one of my favourite movies; one I watch several times a year.
