Review of Driven (2001) by Waleed A — 12 Aug 2009
I wanted to like this movie so much - only partly due to so much of it being filmed in Toronto. But I found myself standing in the theater and shouting "have you ever hear of fuel cells?!?" (People behind me were not amused.) Yes, the Ledfut is a race fan.
The Indy-style cars of the movie are designed to stick to the ground. They do lift from time to time but they can't fly hundreds of feet through the air - unless upside down. And for vehicles running on alcohol-based fuel stored in protective bladders, they erupted into huge fireballs if you spit on them too hard. (You can't see an alcohol fire).
If you don't care about realism, you might care about story. That's pretty predictable, here. Old guy teaches the new guy all there is to know. While the story did get engaging at times, it is always overshadowed by the action.
Probably the best action sequences in the whole film came with the sight of Indy cars flying through city streets. There again, realism goes out the window faster than a flying manhole cover. Yes the covers are bolted down on street races so the suction of passing cars won't move them. The key word is "move". Isn't that the same suction that keeps them flying hundreds of feet through the air?
