Review of Driven (2001) by Victor L — 07 Jan 2011
"I was raised by frogs......ribbit...ribbit".
Rookie driver Jimmy Bly is pressured by owner Carl Henry to accept Joe Tanto as a mentor.
The film is divided into two distinct parts, on-track and off-track. The on-track segments contain all the tired cliché's of racing films, crashes, buddy racing, rivalry with another driver, lousy cinematography, main characters always in the front of the pack, and the noise of the cars, but driver throws something else in for good measure, horrendous special effects.
The off-track segments do not fair any better. When not focusing on the racing, the film turns into some kind of greek relationship tragedy; choosing to concentrate on a lame love triangle, the loyalty between two childish brothers, an inside peak into Stalone's character's girl, and the details of a hundred other relationships, all of which I couldn't care less about.
The direction is subpar, as Renny does little more than throw in songs to generate some sort of emotion. In, fact there really isn't a single reason to watch this film. The film should never have left the pits.
