Review of Drive (2011) by Nathan M — 23 Mar 2014
The 80's inspired neo-noire style fits the story and actors perfectly. Ryan Gosling portrays the nameless driver. His words are sparse and more is said in his silence to drive the action than when every other character opens their mouth.
The stylized electronic soundtrack helps drive the film, highlighting the emotions driving through each scene. When the violence eventually plays out, it's with an artistic melancholy that would seem amiss in less muted and driven films.
An iconic white jacket worn by Gosling's character is slowly stained red as more people underestimate how driven he is to protect the people he has come to love while he drives them around in his car.
The stylized Los Angeles is the perfect setting to drive this story, with its scenese or starkly realistic violence, to its thrilling finale. Drive to the store and pick up a copy as soon as you can. It stands on its own artistic merit and helps do drive the genre ever forward.
