Review of Drinking Buddies (2013) by Nathan M — 06 Dec 2013
The performances take center stage in Joe Swanberg's latest indie comedy about the complicated friendships between men and women.
The Good: The cast - Subtle, yet effective, the quartet of lead actors carry this film, and lead the audience on an emotional journey. It's often hard to find what is scripted and what is improvised dialogue, and that's entirely effective in making these characters feel genuine and real.
The script - Joe Swanberg's screenplay feels like a group of friends talking rather than large speeches that expose the film's deeper meanings. Through watching these characters interact it's easy to see the messages Swanberg intended, without having to be beaten over the head with them.
The direction - The entire tone of the film feels like an early 90s indie comedy. It's fun and the focus is on relationships, rather than being heavy and full of proliferating speeches. It's like good Kevin Smith.
The bad: Not much bad to talk about.
The smugly: The music - The music choices were a little annoying. It felt too much like he was trying to access those old 90s indie films.
