Review of Drinking Buddies (2013) by Danielle G — 02 Jan 2015
A rare film which has some appreciable qualities and really flawed qualities in all departments.
Firstly, Writing- A very VERY generic concept with a slight twist. However the twist makes things even worse. By the end of the film you come to an understanding that nothing really has changed since the beginning of the film.
Scripted awfully bad, the story is consistently one dimensional and tries to give a artsy vibe, however it just feels as if, while the characters are enjoying, we're the creepy spying weirdos trying to get into their private space.
Direction- Nothing spectacular whatsoever and stays completely safe and boring. Not even one shot which I would remember.
Acting- Olivia Wilde does a really good job at portraying her character and the chemistry between all characters are as you would want it to be. However, one of the protagonists Jake Johnson suffers from some bad acting at times. Initially itself his attitude was very pissing off and at no point of the film was he an enjoyable character. It was very bad casting in my opinion. A person like that would work well as the asshole of the group.
An interesting idea pulled off so very badly that I finished it just to give a review on it. Joe Swanberg is not meant to be in this business.
