Did Brian De Palma set out to emulate Hitchcock or was he actually disguising his emulation of Hitchcock and actually emulated French New Wave director Goddard? The jury is still out. De Palma takes a very Hitchcockian premise in this film and manages a few unique twists that make the film a De Palma film.
De Palma has been facinated by duality since his first horror film, SISTERS (1973) and takes the theme further in this film than he had done previously. The killer has a split personality but almost every character in this film seems to assume more than one personality or identity to acheive their goals.
And De Palma's films have a dreamlike, waking nightmare quality that is all his own doing. Angie Dickenson and Michaeal Caine are joined by De Palma regulars Nancy Allen (then, the director's girlfriend) and Dennis Franz.
