Review of Dredd (2012) by Bronwen M — 07 Jun 2014
Dredd is about a thousand times better than the Sly Stallone rendition. It is dark, violent and much truer to the character's comic book origins. Not that this is a dig, but Judge Dredd is not really the protagonist of the film.
But that's not to say it doesn't work. Olivia Thirlby (as Judge trainee Anderson) really carries the emotional beats of the movie--because Dredd can't. Do say he doesn't change as a character would be false, but he doesn't change much.
That's kind of true to character. Karl Urban gets Dredd right. It's a shame that the film didn't perform well at the box office. That's a shame, because I would definitely like to see a sequel--if only to see how they could spin another story around a character who doesn't change much.
