Review of Dredd (2012) by Leonard P — 09 Nov 2013
Now I feel bad for not seeing this in the theater. It makes me sad that this made so little money. I thought this was, while incredibly violent, beautifully filmed. Karl Urban did Dredd right; (mostly) unfeeling, calm, and unbending in his application of the law. He was much better as Dredd than Stallone was back in the 90s. Overall, this movie was really well cast; I liked Lena Headey as Ma-Ma, she had the right mix of strength, leadership, and sociopathy. Olivia Thirlby, as the rookie, had the right mix of strength and weakness to create internal conflict for the character, a strong desire to succeed, and a hint of sexiness.
I love how this takes place during one day of Dredd's life. For the viewer, the day seems like an insane day of violent anarchy, for Dredd, it was just another rough day at the office. I have to consider, what kind of person could live like that day after day?
