Review of Dreams (1990) by Seabury N — 22 Apr 2009
Parts of this movie seem less than compelling, but if you are going to document your dreams in this manner, it makes sense that you must stick to your source material, not go out and add in more interesting plot details.
It would be very difficult to improve this movie. Perhaps if you took some drug that altered your dreams you might get some more interesting stuff. Aside from the fact that his unconscious mind doesn't make the most compelling and deep material, this movie is great.
It's still interesting to see what his subconscious mind comes up with, and how it is similar to my own dreams in some ways. There is a type of symbolism in dreams that is common to us all yet complex in ways that delibirate symbolism often isn't.
This movie is visually stunning, really spectacular camera and set work. It's worth watching for that alone, but is by no means a masterpiece. It is a curiosity and a visual truimph, but not profound or moving.
