Review of Dreams (1990) by Rich B — 15 Jun 2010
Dreams (1990) ? Akira Kurosawa directs a film comprised of eight short stories that depict his most powerful dreams. The dreams are understandably outside my realm of imagination, so I didn?t spend much time worrying about that.
Instead, I worked to get a feel for the film. Each of the stories had a rhythm that was occasionally supplemented with choreography. Often, the rhythm was a bit ponderous and I hung on the edge of boredom.
A few times, the images were quite powerful. Martin Scorsese helps out in one of the short films, and George Lucas? Industrial and Light Magic assists with another. Each of the stories focuses on personal experience.
In one of them, I got a rude reminder: If I thought I was traumatized by what the Al-Qaeda did to us on 9/11, stop and think about the impact of what we did to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
