Review of Dreamgirls (2006) by Ernest C — 15 Oct 2010
The musical numbers in this film are fantastic, the story emotional and several actors give unexpectedly powerful performances (Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy and to a lesser extent, Beyoncé Knowles). Particular mention must be made of the musical numbers â??And I Am Telling You I'm Not Goingâ?? and â??Listenâ??.
In what is effectively a roman à clef about The Supremes, the story covers with power, ambition and betrayal. Perhaps the overtly musical nature of the film may not appeal to all (it is a musical about the music business, as opposed to a story with musical numbers), but this is a film I willingly recommend and will gladly watch again.
