Review of Dream Home (2010) by Callie A — 10 Feb 2011
This is a new Horror/Slasher film from Hong Kong. I actually read about it on myspace a few nights ago. It's out in very limited theatres. But if you have On-Demand you can now rent it and watch it on your own TV.
Cheng Li-sheung has worked and saved money her whole life to get the flat (apartment) of her dreams with a view of the Ocean. However the driving property costs have caused her to hit her breaking point. In order to get the price lowered.. she decides to go on a killing rampage of other residents in the building.
It's a smart idea right? Let's drive the property value down by murdering 11 people in the same building.
This is a low budget film from Hong Kong with subtitles. The film is pieced together very well. They do a great job at explaining Cheng's story and why she wants this apartment. And we also see a event from her childhood that had a major influence on her decision to kill. Instead of telling the back story first this film jumps in time. I really like the time-jump in this film because it explains the story, and has some kills right afterwords, back to story, and back to kills.
Speaking of the kills. This film has set the bar high for 2010 horror/slasher films. There are some very entertaining kills and scenes in this film. There is one scene that might make you bite your finger or look away. But that's the reason we watch them.. right? I know exactly what to expect out of a slasher film and this movie has it. The bonus is the fact that we get a pretty good story mixed in. And that's something we rarely see in slasher films.
