Review of DragonHeart (1996) by Matthew E — 28 Feb 2010
I suddenly wanted to see that one, despite having ignored for years - and it was an amazing movie experience! A beautiful fantasy movie with a greatly animated dragon which looked absolutely amazing. I loved the humour which lightened the mood here and there, and laughed out loud several times.
Dennis Quaid perfectly portrayed the rough knight Bowen who has lost all his ideals when his protegé, the prince, becomes a despotic and cruel king despitehaving being taught the code of the old knights. I especially liked how he managed to act the change in Bowen in his relationship to the dragon. The dialogues between them were wonderful.
Sean Conenry as the voice of Draco was of course wonderful. Sometimes booming, sometimes with a glint in his voice - he was just perfect.
To see David Thewlis as the villain here was a bit strange as I knew him mostly from the Harry Potter movies. He played the immortal king really hateable and I didn't like him one bit - so that role worked well for him!
This is a movie which is just fun to watch and which provides a great pause from the "real world" - I really enjoyed it!
