Review of Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) by Stephen M — 18 Mar 2008
I never read anything about Bruce Lee. To tell the truth, I wasn't really interested - no disrespect meant to the great man. I just hadn't ever had the inclination.
I saw this movie, though, because my spouse wanted to; and it changed my life.
Because of this film I now have an interest in Bruce Lee, in his life, his philosophies, his spirituality. I hear that there are inaccuracies in the story, as told in this film, which I understand - that happens in every biopic. Oops. Sorry. What the film served to do, though, was put the desire in me to learn more: so now I can go on a journey into his body of work, maybe read a bio about him. I DID pick up a copy of The Tao of Jeet Kun Do.
I think that, if this movie did nothing else but turn me onto Bruce Lee (and, I am sure, many others), that is enough. But it does more. It's good entertainment, good film making. The fight scenes are amazing and Jason Scott Lee and Lauren Holly are sheer delight to watch. The score is extraordinary and, in fact, I listen to it in my Ipod when I am working out.
I cannot recommend the film enough.
On a personal note, I read in some other Flickster reviews of this film that some people don't like Jason Scott Lee. I worked with him once and I want to say that he was one of the nicest celebrities I have ever known and I hold him dear to my heart. Whatever negative stories you have heard about him, my own personal experience was one that showed him to be a generous and kind, a loving man.
