Review of Dragnet (1987) by Drew R — 05 Jul 2007
A critically reviled box office bomb that attempted to recreate the glories of the cult 50s TV series but ended up insulting its memory. Dan Ackroyd gives a passable - if fat - performance, however.
That's not the thunder of applause you hear, but 'Uncle Joe' turning in his grave in horror at this witless parody of the famous TV series.
The original Joe Friday (Webb) was the sharp fast-talking LAPD sergeant, and he's now referred to as the uncle of the new incumbent (Aykroyd), blessed with a freewheeling partner (Hanks).
The lame attempt at recreating the style and commentary of the original is soon smothered by some stupid disguises and general mayhem. The script is execrable, the playing forced and the direction flat. Deservedly a critical and box-office fiasco.
