Review of Drag Me to Hell (2009) by Dana F — 02 Jun 2013
This movie is scary, campy, creepy, and hilarious. As contradictory as those elements may seem, they are blended together perfectly and they all really work. I don't know how Sam Raimi does it, but it seems to me that he's the only one to get this very specific genre right.
Having recently seen the Evil Dead series (also Raimi), it was great to see a more modern horror flick use the same elements so successfully, and with better effects! It's a basic enough story (alas, the poor gypsies, they will never get out from under their evil curse-happy stereotype), but it's how it's done that makes this film stand out.
It's a rarity when a movie can totally creep me out and make me laugh out loud within the same 60-second period. If you like horror, or camp, or campy horror, definitely check it out.
