Review of Drag Me to Hell (2009) by David W — 11 Dec 2013
At first I thought a lot of the gag-horror moments were accidentally bad, but researched it and found that it is Raimi's style to intentionally go campy. Even if the bad special effects are intentional, there is still no excusing the generic, unlikely-even-for-supernatural-horror script and out of place acting.
It's rather appalling how high a score this film has from the critics, but if you look at their comments, they almost exclusively focus on the comedic element without any regard for the disjointed story and unconvincing cast.
A curse is placed for an entirely arbitrary reason; even by the standards of senseless fiction, there is no real reasoning behind the story's conflict. The premise, development, and conclusion could not be more generic.
There were a few scenes that actually made the plot more effective as a love story. Justin Long and Alison Lohman did well portraying a couple, which is oddly the only impressive thing in this horror.
