Review of Dracula (1958) by Joe B — 02 Apr 2008
Ah... so I've finally found the good Hammer horror film I've been searching for! Christopher Lee is so charming in the opening scenes, and the photography is lush and gorgeous... but, as with most other cinematic adaptations of the story, the plot bears only a cursory resemblance to Stoker's original novel.
The cast is more than up to the story demands, and I liked the perpetually prowling camera. A tad more adherence to plot over spectacle would have helped the final reel (did this thing really need to end with a bare-knuckle brawl between Lee and Cushing?), but this movie was overall quite satisfying.
