Review of Dracula (1958) by Ricky M — 24 May 2008
Well they don't come much better than this. Hammer at its absolute finest in one of the best adaptions of the Dracula.
This has everything the Hammer template suggests, village inn, horse driven coaches, cod mid European setting and its two greatest stars in iconic roles.
Peter Cushing is excellent as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee is the definitive screen Dracula, whether he likes it or not, and the rest of the supporting cast are great.
Fair enough this takes liberties with Stoker's story, no trip to England etc, but enough is there for it to be recognisable. But when everything else is so great this is only a small grumble. Reductions to the plot make for a swift and pacy film, time flies by.
A true Horror classic.
