Review of Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1943) by Stephen C — 21 Aug 2011
The first of The Amicus omnibus horro stories is a mixed bag and it can seem a little tame in comparison to todays horror films.
That said ,there is plenty here that works and the good stories outweigh the weaker ones.
The basic premise is that Peter Cushings Dr Schreck tells the fortune of five individuals in a train carriage.
This neat idea sets up the stories the best being the First Werewolf story and the last two with Christopher Lee being menaced by a severed hand and Donald Sutherland and his vampire wife.
The Killer plant is a bit silly and the Voodoo one is a bit lame ,but Freddie Francis who directs here manages to sort the wheat from the chaff in the film as a whole.
Cushing is excellent as always and the whole package rattles along nicely right up to and including the twist ending.
Vintage Brit horror and the template for later Amicus films.
