Review of Dr. No (1962) by Seán P — 19 Jan 2010
The film that started a franhise, Dr. No is, in most opinions, the best Bond movie ever produced. From the iconic scene where Ursula Andress emerges from the water clad in a bikini, to the supervillian Dr. No's huge island lair, it was destined to become a success.
This movie along with From Russia With Love are unique in the way they were laid out as compared to the rest of the series. The format was "Gun Barrel Sequence, Credits, Film, Credits", until Goldfinger had added into the mix the iconic preview after the gun barrel.
Dr. No plays out more like a detective movie than about a super spy. The story are more character driven, the focus is on dialogue and action. When we hit Goldfinger, it broadens this with the inclusion of more gadgets, special effects, gorgeous women, and the all important Bond car.
Dr. No will be remembered forever in cinema history as one of the best and most timeless action movies. It started a franchise that continues today as one of the highest grossing film series to date, and is adored by fans the world over.
