Review of Downfall (2004) by Stephen D — 18 May 2012
This is the best Hitler flick I have ever seen. I think it is because the actors are German that they can capture what made Hitler simultaneously attractive and repulsive. American actors focus solely on Hitler's repulsive side turning any portrayal into a bad caricature.
Obviously Hitler had some charisma else he wouldn't have won elections, and this film shows it in the relationship with his young secretary Traudl which is fatherly and caring. Does it creep anyone else out that Hitler was vegetarian and loved dogs? Goebbels definitely comes across as someone who drank his own kool-aid.
