Review of Downfall (1997) by Andrew M — 28 Dec 2009
A war film and also a look at the last days of Adolf Hitler. Even as Berlin falls down around him he never gives up his dream of the final victory. The scene where the children are murdered is more horrific than the violence that takes place in the streets above the bunker.
Bruno Ganz is mesmerising as Hitler and somehow makes him appear sympathetic. Although half the cast end up killing themselves the movie does manage to have a sort of positive ending revolving around rebirth and starting again from nothing.
