Review of Downfall (1997) by Paul R — 07 May 2014
Why Bruno Ganz wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his immaculate portrayal of History's most evil person is beyond me. This is isn't a mere showcase of Hitler in his last pitiful attempts at making a final stance, rather, a detailed look at the humanity of a monster forced into a corner with no easy resolution.
The entire cast is marvelous, as we see one historical figure after another where no actor is mugging for camera; they simply are their characters. The entire backdrop of war-ridden Berlin and the hopeless bunker of despair lend themselves to the film's overall dower tone.
There is no easy resolution for anyone, but more of a realization of the end of one's legacy.
