Review of Down with Love (2003) by Lauren H — 12 Jan 2011
First, full disclosure: I despise the Doris Day/Rock Hudson sex comedies of the 60s. They are at best banal justifications of sexism, at worst downright offensive. So when a film takes those movies and tears them to shreds with teeth bared, I kinda warm up to it.
And the acting is excellent in this one, despite MacGregor's inability to maintain an American accent. But really, this is Zellweger at her least annoying and MacGregor at his most charming. Not to mention the inspired casting of David Hyde Pierce in the typical Tony Randall/Gig Young role (complete with unsubtle homosexual subtext) and Sarah Paulson as the savvy secretary.
Tons of fun, but quite chock full of venom for those old sixties films. Probably not for people who think Mad Men and the corporate culture are the best part of the 60s.
