Review of Down to Earth (2001) by Jason M — 19 Apr 2008
Interesting to see a remake of 'heaven can wait' being done with such attention to the original. most remakes take just the core of movie, in this case it is nearly scene for the scene the same. except of course, this version has a lot of comedy.
This is very typical chris rock, and the stand up routines in the film are very funny. but strangely enough the 'being dead' part of the film serves as nothing more than a plot device, being used only once or twice for actual comic effect. which makes me wonder if the Weitz's were still trying to make the same points as the original. looking at the immutablity of the soul despite person and circumstance. and rather ironic push for the notion of fate. I say ironic because they create an incompetent God but then rely on such a notion of fate.
Not cinematic genius, but good for a laugh. very similar to 'head of state'.
