Review of Down in the Valley (2005) by Lauren - — 20 Jun 2007
I do not know why I like this film; it?s pretentious, utterly conscious of being indie, stars the currently annoying Evan Rachel Wood and is on the whole a completely miserable experience by the time the end credits start rolling one feels the need to maybe slit ones wrists.
The film has no substance at all and has some the oddest facial hair ever seen, it?s an empty film striving for greatness and cool yet fails at almost every hurdle. The actors make no headway and little impact Evan Wood is especially absent throughout the film doing nothing for her career except making one think Thirteen was a fluke, her pasty complexion and performance quickly fade into the glaring white sun that shine on LA and Norton though obviously to decent an actor to really suck that much, especially when surrounded by such apparent amateurs, fails to make any impact.
Though he does look very young considering he?s playing the older man (which is a personal positive no doubt) he?s the best thing in the film and is at time fascinating to observe. However there are aspects of his turn that reminded me so much of his role in Primal Fear that it seems he?s falling back on previous tricks that worked once so why not again? It?s too familiar a performance to be any good.
Still I seem to like this film; it?s quite the conundrum?
