Review of Down by Law (1986) by Jennifer D — 30 Dec 2009
The film centres around three men who escape from prison masterminded by the wonderful and Jarmusch favourite, Roberto Benigni. Rather than the story centering around the escape plan, it focuses on the relationship between the men and the unspoken desire for friendship even when there's a burning hatred.
The film, as with many of Jarmusch classics (Dead Man, Ghost Dog, Night On Earth) draws you in with it's funny and heartwarming dialogue. It's a wonderful and simple story shot in seductive black and white and Jarmusch gets some great performances from his leads, specifically Tom Waits as Zack and Robert Benigni as Bob.
A special film.
