Review of Down by Law (1986) by Alex H — 26 Oct 2007
An early great from Jarmusch, this film sets the standard for relaxed, emotive filmmaking. More focused on expressing the brilliance of his cast than telling a story, Jarmusch gives his three real-life friends all the space that they need to be their cool, likable, engaging selves.
Some viewers understandably find the pace too slow and the ending too unsatisfying, but those with an interest in this sort of 'beat noir', or a liking for Jarmusch's later, more commercially successful ventures, will find a lot to love.
Down By Law is also essential viewing for any Waits fan; the musician has done a great number of film cameos, but this role shows that he has the skill to lead as well.
