Review of Down by Law (1986) by Alan E — 05 Jan 2009
My favorite Jim Jarmusch film. Not your typical prison break film, this film explores the interaction between three men, rather than focus on how they plan to escape. It's fun watching the three exchange dialog, especially with Roberto Benigni involved.
(The "ice cream" scene is priceless.) Not a serious prison film, yet it feels more realistic than what we would see out of a jail cell from typical Hollywood blockbuster. Jarmusch tends to slow down the pace of the story just a little to allow time for the viewer to take in the city streets of New Orleans and the swamp environment of Louisiana.
This doesn't hurt the film at all, and only helps to make the story even more important. (Man vs. nature comes into play.) The film carries a slow but steady pace and entertains the entire way. Overall, a very fun, feelgood movie.
