Review of Down by Law (1986) by Martin T — 27 Jul 2010
I'll start by saying that my life hasn't been the same since I witnessed Jim Jarmusch riding a bicycle around a vacant New York City loft on Bored to Death. As someone not totally unfamiliar with Jarmusch's work, I came into this expecting smart and purposeful shots with a healthy dose of sarcasm.
In typical Jarmusch fashion, we're met with all important questions of life and living. "There's no floor, no jail, no bunks..." The film has a rawness and a sincerity that even Brecht would appreciate.
While the film is successful on most levels, it's the dynamic between Benigni and co-stars that really drives the film. We close at a crossroads - Does it matter?
