Review of Doubt (2008) by Dawdlingpoet — 21 Nov 2021
This is a very dialogue heavy film - one with good performances from Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Its very thought provoking and covers important themes, namely child abuse within the church - quite a taboo subject until recently. The plot is rather slow to build up but I thought it was surprisingly engaging even though its a bit of a slow burner and the characters are intriguing too. Its a somewhat sobering watch, of course. I found it interesting the speech about the titular subject (i.e. doubt, of course) given by Father Brendan Flynn and there were some scenes in which both of the main cast members (Streep and Hoffman) are really quite emotional - I found those scenes quite compelling to watch.
This is a film to think about, a good drama that may stay with you for a while. Its not visually shocking - indeed its subtle and understated. Yes I would recommend this film to others.
