Outstanding performances from Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Viola Davis - all totally rivetting. I was surprised by the ending too (desperately wanted it to continue) but of course it is deliberately "irritating" to us viewers - the title of the movie is the entire message we are supposed to be left with.
Its a messy ending - as it would be/is in real life. (Just watched it a 2nd time this week and it was even better than before!).
