Review of Doubt (2003) by Stevie S — 03 Jul 2010
Good performances and a great last 30 minutes couldn't save this otherwise over-done, melodramatic piece. As my wife said, this would have made a great play (which, of course, it was first). As a movie, it needed to be pared down and more concise. Hoffman and Streep were great when they were together, and there needed to be more of that. Adams, who is a favorite of mine, just didn't seem to connect with the piece or give it life... and it hurts me to say that, as she's usually so good at bringing life to her roles.
What could have, and probably should have, been an incredible tale of the progressive priest battling it out with the archaic nun instead fell flat.
Worth seeing for the acting, but otherwise is a skip.
