Review of Double Indemnity (1973) by Erik J — 23 Apr 2010
The quintessential film noir piece. Chandler's script sizzles with snappy dialogue that perfectly contrasts the cold, calculating characters and dark themes that inhabit the last two acts of the picture. Edward G. Robinson is superb in his supporting role, able to produce humor and levity in the midst of tense situations. Supense is high and the ending uncertain.
The photography sets the stage and amplifies the emotions of the characters with dark rooms lit only by lingering cigar smoke and rain tapping at the window like dry knuckles. Loneliness is captured in these beautiful shots and add to our concern for these anti-heroes as the tangled web grows tighter around them until betrayal is inevitable.
