Review of Double Indemnity (1973) by Adrian B — 21 Oct 2010
It is hard to believe that is film noir masterpiece is directed by the same guy who did Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment. It is such a breathtaking, sexy, beautiful film of deliciousness. Well acted and contains terrific, scathing dialogue, this film has turns and twists, and essentially set the bar for mystery and suspense movies of the 1940's.
It is a well crafted murder mystery, that essentially has two plots. One follows the enactment of the murder along with the plotting of the brutal crime, and the second, follows the criminal's plan go wrong, with little cracks developing, eventually showing their identity to the world.
Credit for greatness must go MacMurray (who some say was not great but I personally could not picture anyone else in this role and he was very good), the sexy and breathtaking Stanwyck, the pervasive Robinson, and two the supporting cast.
As well Chandler and Wilder should be complemented for their extraordinary efforts. My favourite film of Wilder's, my favourite film of the 1940's cinema, and one the best films of all time. Masterpiece! Incidently, to those who love watching old movies or are Wilder fans, you must watch his 1960 masterpiece The Apartment and this film at the same time, and you will find some astonishing similarities (although the genre of both films is incredibly different).
