Review of Double Indemnity (1973) by Roman R — 21 Aug 2012
You know what's great about an excellent old movie? They never get old. A nearly 70 year-old movie and it still resonates. I saw this in a film class when I was 20 years old, thinking it was gonna be boring old crap and wow was I wrong then, but 15 years later I am so right in saying, this is an excellent piece of filmmaking.
Billy Wilder gives just a taste of his brilliance here. Fred MacMurray, who later would become the Shaggy Dog and a family movie actor, shows he was more than just the funny dad. Barbara Stanwyck oozes sexuality in a time when sex was so taboo that you had to hide it.
Yet she as sexy in a towel as any sexpot actress now who would take her clothes off. Edward G. Robinson, with his bulldog face commands the screen in every scene he is in. Double Indemnity may not have created Film Noir but it gave us the blueprint.
