Review of Double Indemnity (1944) by João P — 23 Jun 2010
My fourth Billy Wilder film in recent weeks, and it's another belter. This one took a little bit longer to grab me completely, once it had me it never let go.
Fred MacMurray is terrific as the smooth-talking salesman who falls for Barbara Stanwyck's tremendous femme fatale. She snares him like the film snares the viewer. When it comes, the fatal deed is brilliantly executed. Edward G Robinson is fantastic as the cunning claims investigator who helps unravel the story and its twists.
The final scenes are tremendous, as MacMurray's downfall is completed: "you won't even make it to the elevator...".
