Review of Double Indemnity (1944) by Tommy H — 28 Apr 2015
The movie is restrained compared to most 1940's film noir that I've seen. The genre usually has a comic book detective story feel to it. You sense it in the dreamy way scenes transition, how the lighting and angles in each frame is stylized like a comic book panel, how the dialogue is smooth and filled with one-liners like a showdown between superhero and villain, and so on.
Double Indemnity isn't like that. It's more down to Earth and grounded in reality, while at the same time retaining the clever, romantic and devious charm of the genre. This makes it either one of the best or one of the worst.
In my opinion, it's one of the best. It's a good movie for people who don't like the eccentricities typically found in old film noir.
