Review of Double Indemnity (1944) by Richard D — 31 May 2015
Billy Wilder directing a James M. Cain adaptation by Raymond Chandler? Good God that sounds magnificent ... and it is. Wilder seems to be one of the only directors that realized that Fred MacMurray had a dark side.
Although Stanwyck and Robinson are as good as you'd expect, MacMurray kind of steals the show with his oily, languidness. I don't think I ever really buy that MacMurray and Stanwyck are really crazy about each other, but I also don't think you're really ever supposed to.
Both seem more driven by the promise of money and getting away with a crime than really wanting each other, and really ... the real relationship that this film is about is between Robinson and MacMurray.
