Review of Dope (2015) by Tyler E — 14 Jan 2016
*SPOILERS* I don't want to repeat what everyone's out there have already said, so there's my outline of what I've found worth mentioning about this movie.
The positive:
1. it reminds of the importance of respecting people and speaking with everyone at their level.
2. It makes funny references to the internet age culture.
3. It makes funny references to the black culture.
4. It has a tribute to the "straight outta compton" movie.
The negative:
1. the plot is not coherent and people are just behaving in the opposite way the real people would behave. Like gang members giving respect to kids humiliating them.
2. In it's cathartic moment the film plays the minority card.
3. It doesn't really give the "nerd" part of the audience who might identify with the main heroes a positive behavior pattern of being cooler and growing up, instead proposing conformity to the "gang" culture (which the majority of nerds don't really come in contact to anyway).
