Review of Dope (2015) by Nick D — 29 Dec 2015
Maybe it's the bicycles, but I kept thinking, this here is an African-American "Breaking Away" -- silly, since the stories aren't anything alike, and yet both have the energy of freedom, of ambition and breaking out from the shackles of adolescence into the world where one can be a man (or, in the case of one of the main characters, a mannish woman, a nice twist).
I loved the geeky central character's desperate attempts at being cool, getting laid, and then his switchback to get revenge. Warm and loving script about real people.
